What is financial health?

Financial health is about the state of someone's financial well-being. It refers to their ability to manage and maintain their finances in a sustainable and secure manner. Having good financial health can provide more stability, clarity and a pathway to financial freedom. Having an emergency fund, for example, can prevent you from going into debt and give you peace of mind. Creating a budget will help you track your income and expenses. And  debt management strategies like debt consolidation or creating a payoff plan can help you regain control of loans and credit cards.

Five ways to improve your financial health

In order to reduce your current debt, the first thing you need to do is be sure you don't take on any additional financial commitments. Try to plan your repayments based on realistic goals and work out which debts to try and tackle first, as some will incur higher interest fees, so those should be paid off first.

We have all be guilty of popping into the shop to buy one thing and coming out with something else that took our fancy, but by cutting back on buying unnecessary small day-to-day items, the savings really do add up. Even making your own coffee to take into work instead of stopping at a cafe could save you up to £1,000 a year! Small changes really do make a difference.

There are so many ways you can earn some extra money these days – from selling your old clothes to up cycling furniture and selling it on at a profit. Not only could this bring in some extra cash, it's sustainable and good for the environment too.

Create a budget for your monthly income and stick to it. Having a plan that lets you know how much you have to spend on bills, eating out and leisure activities each month can really help you keep track of where your money is going and how much of it you are spending!

Food is a big outgoing, so why not write a list before you do your weekly shop. Instead of wandering around the supermarket putting things in your trolley that look good, plan your meals and write a detailed list of what you need to cook them. It's a great way to keep costs down.
